Class Absences

Student Class Absence Notifications

Many students encounter situations that are unexpected** and may interrupt their ability to attend classes.  Whether it is a hospitalization, death in the family, or other critical/emergency incident, in most cases, students plan to resume class attendance as soon as they are able.  In these situations, the Dean of Students Office, when requested and as a courtesy to a student, can send a notification to course instructors making them aware of a student’s absence.

To request a class absence notification, students or family members can contact the CARE Team Case Management Staff. While our staff does not require documentation to be provided, an instructor might.  Depending on the nature of the absence, the Case Management Staff may also follow-up with a student for on-going support.

It is important to note that course instructors make the ultimate decision regarding excusing absences in their classes.  Students are advised by the Case Management Staff to consult their course syllabus and contact their individual instructor (beforehand or upon return) to obtain information on how absences will be handled for each class or to discuss the possibility for make-up work.

If you would like to request an Absence Notification be sent, please email careteam@temple.edu. Please include your name, ID#, dates of absence and reason for absences.

**If this is a pre-planned absence or an absence related to a short-term challenge (ex. cold/flu, non-urgent medical procedure, vacation, job interview, etc.), please outreach directly to your faculty member.
