Parent and Family Weekend

Overview

Parents and Family Weekend is an annual event designed to allow parents and families the opportunity to reconnect with their students while taking in the sights, sounds, and recreational opportunities that Temple University and the city of Philadelphia have to offer. It is also a great time to experience first-hand what life is like on campus and off.

We hope that our parents and families take advantage of Parents and Family Weekend and that they see how much Temple University values their partnership and support in making their student's college experience so extraordinary! Throughout the weekend we will also be highlighting other ways for continued engagement such as joining our newly established Temple Parents and Family Association, The Parliament.

History

Parent and Family Weekend began in November 1986 and was organized by the Student Assistance Center which was the office that handled student life issues before the Division was officially created in 1990.  The Student Assistance Center became part of the Division of Student Affairs when it was established. The event originated as Freshmen Parent’s Weekend, and then developed into Parent and Family Weekend. The weekend continued to be celebrated through the mid-2000's and is now being brought back after a several year hiatus.

After hearing from parents and family members during both New Student and Parent and Family Orientation regarding their desire to be more actively involved in understanding and supporting their student's college experience, the Office was restructured to include a significant role in parent and family programs.  This coupled with President Theobald's goal to incorporate these opportunities lead to the Office of Orientation and New Student Programs and the Office of Alumni Relations partnership to bring back this annual event to support the need and requests of our families.

Thoughts from Leadership

"The Division of Student Affairs is thrilled to co-sponsor the return of Parents and Family Weekend at Temple University!  We are excited to devote an entire weekend of engagement to our parents and families as they are such an integral part of our Temple community.  Through it all, there will be so many opportunities to develop lasting relationships campus-wide as well as to highlight the vibrant culture of the city of Philadelphia. We are looking forward to sharing in this very memorable time with our students and their parents and families. Undoubtedly, PFW 2015 will be an unforgettable experience with fun for everyone!"

-Dr. Stephanie Ives, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

"Parents and Family Weekend gives us a chance to engage with the families of our future alumni in a way that is both meaningful and genuine. These moms and dads, grandparents and siblings are as much a part of the Temple family as are their students. Parent and Family Weekend is an opportunity for them to soak up the Temple experience alongside their student, and - ideally - to walk away with a greater sense of comfort and pride."

-Ken Lawrence, Vice President of the Office of Alumni Relations
